Meet The Staff
Doug Serven
Rev. Doug Serven serves as our campus minister. Here are a few things you might want to know about him, and perhaps a bit more that you weren't asking for.
Doug grew up in a church-going home in southwest Missouri and graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia with a Bachelor's of Journalism degree. As a freshman, he met some seniors who had moved back into the dorms, and because of their friendship and involvement in his life, and because of the drawing love of Christ, he became a Christian. While there he was actively involved in a campus group called The Navigators.
While there he met Julie. Julie didn't grow up going to church at all. The first time she remembers hearing the gospel was when Doug told her why they couldn't date - because their eternal destinies were headed in different directions. Though that isn't the normal or preferred "witnessing" style, Julie started thinking about the gospel and through reading the Bible and having conversations with the women in the ministry, she too came to Christ and began to grow in her walk with Jesus. Julie also graduated with a Journalism degree.
Doug and Julie graduated in May of 1993, and were married the following March (1994). Doug went on staff with The Navigators at Oklahoma State University for three years and then one year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Following a call to deeper study and ministry, the Servens moved to St. Louis in the summer of 1997 to attend Covenant Theological Seminary.
Doug graduated from Covenant Seminary in May 2000, and served as director for the seminary's Youth In Ministry Institute for a year. Doug and Julie moved to Norman, Oklahoma, in June 2001 to begin the RUF ministry at the University of Oklahoma. He was ordained as a teaching elder in the PCA on Sept. 16, 2001.
Doug and Julie have four children: Ruth, Cal, Drew and Anna. They are official RUFers and are part of the RUF family. In fact, Anna was born on the day of the first OU RUF meeting.
Doug enjoys all sports, especially baseball and hockey. He loves to read (be wary of his passing off too many book recommendations!), drink coffee, discuss, and to have people into their house. Julie enjoys running, reading, discussing and teaching their children (and so much more). One thing you need to know about him is that he looks different every time you see him. He considers himself a "hair artist," and thus he changes goatees, baldness, beards, etc. frequently. Strange, we think. Don't be alarmed.
